Gilles oversees all legal aspects of SOCAN's operations, including proceedings before the Copyright Board of Canada and the courts, corporate governance and strategic development. He joined SOCAN in 2013 after 23 years of private practice with SOCAN’s external law firm, Gowlings, where he was a partner. A highly regarded copyright lawyer, Gilles’ past experience also includes working for the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) as Commission Counsel; successfully representing the defendant in a leading copyright criminal prosecution case; and several other high-profile copyright infringement cases, two of which were recognized as "Copyright Case of the Year" by the publication Managing Intellectual Property. Gilles completed his degree in law at the University of Ottawa and has been a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada since 1991. He is also a member of the Canadian and Ontario Bar Associations, ALAI Canada, AJAVA and the Copyright Society of the USA.
