Eric Baptiste
Chief Executive Officer
With over 20 years of experience in the entertainment industry, Eric Baptiste has influenced broadcast media and cultural policy, and promoted new talent around the world. Prior to joining SOCAN, Eric served as Director General of the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers (CISAC). He currently serves as non-executive General Secretary of the board of Francophonie Diffusion and Chairman of both Radio NEO (non-commercial FM network devoted to new musical talent) and ISAN-IA (ISO’s audiovisual works identification standard). Previously, Eric served as General Manager of RFI (French public international radio) and CEO of 95.2 Paris (French commercial FM station). He has also headed several trade associations and inter-industry groups, including Musiques France Plus and Vive la Radio. The French Government asked him to chair a working group on relations between radio and the music sector and to spearhead a report on digital convergence. A graduate of the Institut d’Études Politiques de Paris and the École nationale d’administration, Eric was bestowed the French government’s award of Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters in 2006.
Jennifer Brown
Vice President, Licensing
Jennifer Brown is responsible for the collection of royalties for the public performance of music in Canada based on tariffs set by the Copyright Board of Canada. She manages relationships with existing media, concert, and general licensees and develops relationships with new ones. With over 15 years of experience at SOCAN, Jennifer has held a number of progressive positions within the Membership, Business Change, and Licensing departments. Some highlights from Jennifer’s career to date include establishing the SOCAN Information Centre, leading the development of industry-leading e-commerce applications, and achieving stellar operational results within Licensing.
Dan Greenwood
Vice President, Corporate Planning and Business Change
Dan Greenwood is responsible for SOCAN’s strategic and corporate planning, optimization of operational processes, and leadership of major corporate initiatives. With 25 years of experience in performing rights, Dan initially joined the Licensing Department at PROCAN, a SOCAN predecessor. Over the years, he has led PROCAN’s Licensing, SOCAN’s Concert, Performance Logging and Identification, and Corporate Planning and Business Change departments. Dan directed the re-engineering of SOCAN’s Membership, Licensing and Distribution functions, achieving some notable innovations including the creation of the assigned account executives program and a focused licencing sales force. Dan has played a major role in a number of significant change projects, including the current technology strategy project whose objective is to build a solid technology future for SOCAN. He holds an MBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Ontario Council of Folk Festivals.
Jeff King
Chief Operating Officer
Jeff King is responsible for SOCAN’s licensing, distribution, information technology corporate planning and business change functions. He is accountable for SOCAN’s revenue and expense management for key operations. Since joining SOCAN in 2001, Jeff has held a number of senior positions throughout the organization and lead initiatives that significantly heightened member and licensee satisfaction. As Vice President of Licensing, Jeff developed a robust strategic plan to expand SOCAN’s customer base and increase efficiency. As Vice President of Membership, Jeff led the development of a number of industry-leading e-commerce tools and the creation of SOCAN’s Information Centre. Prior to joining SOCAN, Jeff was Vice President of Underwriting at Old Republic Insurance Company and helped to lead that organization from industry laggard to industry leader within 3 years. Jeff holds an BA Honours from Wilfrid Laurier University and has been keynote speaker at several international conferences on innovation and free-trade.
France Lafleur
Vice President, Membership
General Manager Quebec and Atlantic Division
With over 30 years of experience at SOCAN and one of its predecessors, CAPAC, France Lafleur is accountable for all aspects of member operations and relations. France’s breadth of knowledge also extends into licensing, serving as Vice President of Licensing from 2001 to 2008. During this period, she successfully oversaw the implementation of a sales and marketing model in the licensing department. Since 2002, she has served as General Manager of SOCAN’s Quebec and Atlantic Division. Prior to 2002, France was manager of SOCAN’s Quebec Division and ran CAPAC’s Montreal office before the merger in 1990. Currently, she is Treasurer of the Canadian Music Centre – Quebec region and also sits on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame. France completed her degree in law at the Université de Sherbrooke and is member of the Quebec Bar Association since 1980.
Michael Lewin
Vice President, Distribution Operations
Michael Lewin is primarily accountable for maintaining an accurate repertoire database and for the timely distribution of royalties to SOCAN members when their music is performed around the globe. Since joining SOCAN in 2005, Michael has contributed to increasing efficiency, completeness, and accuracy in royalty distributions. Some key accomplishments include implementing Digital Audio Identification to track radio performances and introducing processes for the distribution of royalties for new tariffs and music uses, including ringtones, internet, and satellite radio. Prior to joining SOCAN, Michael’s career evolved over 20 years in the financial services sector, mainly with RBC Financial Group. Starting in retail branches, he progressed to business lending, account management, business and process consulting, and finally enterprise-wide costing and profitability modeling and analysis. Michael holds an MBA from the Schulich School of Business at York University and a BA in commerce and economics from the University of Toronto.
Christian Sarrazin
Vice President, Industry Development and International
Christian Sarrazin spearheads SOCAN’s efforts to assume a leadership role within the Canadian and world music industry. He also manages SOCAN’s contribution to the works of international organizations. Christian sits on CISAC’s Common Information System Supervisory Board and is Chair of the Strategic Business & Technology Working Group. He is also a member of the Management Board of FastTrack. With over 30 years of experience, he has served as a diplomat with the Canadian Foreign Service, as a senior executive with the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade and as the Chief Operating Officer of the Canadian Commercial Corporation. He also held several executive positions in Asia for telecommunications companies such as Teleglobe, Harris, and Motorola, and operated his own business, CBCS GLOBAL (Singapore). Christian is a graduate of economics, with a BA Honours from McGill University and an MA from the Université catholique de Louvain in Belgium.
Janice Scott
Vice President, Information Technology
Janice Scott oversees SOCAN’s extensive information technology (IT) environment. Janice joined SOCAN in 2005 as Information Technology Manager and was later promoted to Director of Information Technology Applications. With over 30 years of experience, she began her career as a junior developer and progressed through the IT ranks of analysis and design, business analysis, project management, and management with organizations that include Reed Stenhouse Insurance, Blackwood Hodge Equipment & Service, AMP of Canada Ltd, JBA Software, and OAO Technology Solutions. Janice has a diploma with high honours in Computer Programming and Analysis from Seneca College and is a Project Management Professional.
Paul Spurgeon
Vice President, Legal Services & General Counsel
With over three decades as a lawyer in the music business, Paul Spurgeon is a member of the Canadian Bar Association, the Copyright Society of the U.S.A., and the American Federation of Musicians. He has also served as a member of the Copyright Legislation Committees (Policy) of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada and the Canadian Bar Association. Previously, Paul served as Legal Counsel to CAPAC, one of SOCAN's predecessors, and as a law clerk to the Chief Judge of the County and District Courts of Ontario. In 1988, he was elected to the Legal Committee of CISAC and served as its Chair for several years, currently serving as its vice-Chair. He has appeared before the Copyright Board, the Federal Court of Canada, the Supreme Court of Canada, the CRTC, and various parliamentary committees. He is a graduate of the Faculty of Law and the Richard Ivey School of Business Executive Program of the University of Western Ontario.
Randy Wark
Vice President, Human Resources
Randy Wark is responsible for overseeing SOCAN’s human resources functions. Since being appointed Vice President of Human Resources, Randy has raised SOCAN’s profile as a top Canadian employer. Beyond the over 25 years of experience Randy has in the various fields of his discipline, including training, organizational development, and operations management, he has also led SOCAN’s communications, facilities, and administration functions over the years. He joined SOCAN in 2001 as a Training & Development Specialist, with a particular focus on developing strategies for advancing corporate culture. He was promoted to Director of Human Resources in 2002. Previously, Randy worked in the financial services industry.
David Wood
Chief Financial Officer
As Chief Financial Officer, David Wood brings a practical insight and big-picture perspective to financial decision-making in support of SOCAN’s strategic objectives. He leads financial accounting and analysis, distribution accounting and member ledgers, treasury, taxation and accounts payable activities for the organization. David’s initial role at SOCAN was to establish the operational audit function, which has since collected $7 million in additional licensing revenue. In 1997, David joined the music industry at MCPS-PRS, the London-based mechanical and performing rights organization. He then became CFO at the International Music Joint Venture in Amsterdam and subsequently joined SOCAN in 2002. In his early career, David gained valuable audit and accountancy experience in private practice in the U.K., then developed his analytical and project skills at a major financial services company. He is a qualified certified accountant (FCCA).
