The purpose of Words & Music is to celebrate the success of SOCAN members in all genres of music; to inform and be a resource for its members; and to support SOCAN's role as a defender of copyright and, specifically, performing rights in Canada.
SOCAN members with potential news items, or those who wish to pitch ideas for stories on their activities or careers, are advised that Words & Music's editors seeks to achieve a balance, in each issue and across all issues for the calendar year, of the following criteria when determining which members are covered in the magazine:
- Balance of music genres (jazz, folk, rock, urban, blues, serious, etc.)
- Geographical balance
- Gender balance
- Cultural balance
- Balance of members' career arcs (newcomers, established songwriters/composers, veterans)
The editors also take into account:
- the member's career profile
- the member's relevance to SOCAN activities (such as workshops, SOCAN awards, etc.)
- the timeliness of the candidacy, in relation to a member's new release or other current/newsworthy activity
To propose story ideas, send an e-mail to wordsandmusic@socan.ca.
