CFLM-AM: Tiny Community Radio Station has a Unique Tie to Copyright
by Marc Paquette
“After 50 years, we are still considered a community station, even though we are privately owned,” says André Mercier, Information Director at CFLM-AM, La Tuque, Quebec (population. 16,000). “Community involvement for our station is very important” explains Mercier, adding, “Our recent fundraiser, ‘La Campagne du Gâteau des Latuquois’ brought in $110,000 for the area's less fortunate in just one day.”
As a broadcaster of so many artists’ works, CFLM-AM understands the importance and role of SOCAN. “Protecting artists' rights is very important.” Mercier points out. That commitment extends into the community as well, due, perhaps, to the fact that La Tuque was the location of a regional copyright office back in the ‘50s. “Mme. Lamotte was responsible for the office and she was responsible for deducting copyright fees from the translations that came from other countries like the United States. It’s part of our history,” says Mercier proudly.
Happy 50th anniversary to CFLM-AM and its seven hardworking employees. Long may you remain the voice of La Tuque.
