Tariff 22A: Online Music Service Tariff Q & A
The last 10 years have significantly altered the way music is delivered to, and consumed by, fans worldwide. Here at SOCAN, we offer our customers online use of virtually the entire world's repertoire of music via SOCAN’s Internet tariffs, including Tariff 22A – Online Music Services, which covers downloading and on-demand streaming. As a performing rights organization, it’s our mandate to ensure that all public communications of music to consumers are licensed. With the transition of music sales shifting from retail locations to virtual stores, we make sure that our members—Canadian songwriters, composers and music publishers—and our international affiliates are our first priority in an increasingly online world.
Q: How can you license a download or stream?
A: Since downloads and streams are considered communications to the public by telecommunication from an online music service to consumers, fees must be paid by the online music service for those transmissions.
Q: How do you ensure that what I download or stream is covered under Tariff 22A?
A: We have agreements with performing rights organizations worldwide, covering virtually the world’s repertoire of music, including millions of songs written and composed by Canadian songwriters.
Q: How do you protect your members’ interest online?
A: Audrey Guérin, in SOCAN’s Montreal office, is our designated new media representative. She works tirelessly to protect our members' interest in the ever-changing new-media landscape. Her job is to license all new media customers in accordance with our tariffs.
