Music has always united us, galvanized us and helped us create a community that transcends race and nationality. That holds especially true in sport, from the emotionally-charged “I Believe,” CTV’s 2010 Olympic theme, by Stephan Moccio and Alan Frew, to the anthemic “Hockey Night In Canada” theme song by Dolores Claman, to Stompin’ Tom’s classic “Good Old Hockey Game” (all penned by SOCAN members, FYI).
Witness “Wavin’ Flag,” written by SOCAN member K’naan and designated the official anthem of Coca-Cola's 2010 FIFA World Cup global integrated marketing campaign. Come this June, you’ll hear it literally everywhere in the world, since "Wavin' Flag" will be used as the music element throughout the campaign, including the soundtrack on all of Coca-Cola's global TV commercials for the soccer tournament . It will also be played at all events for Coca-Cola's FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour , an 86-country journey, and featured on Coca-Cola's online digital platform for the World Cup . K'naan will perform the song live during the African element of the trophy tour, which will reach almost all of the countries in Africa.
Arguably the most-watched sporting event in the world, the World Cup has become a symbol of the ability of nations to leave differences at the door and unite under a common goal: score!
K’naan’s songwriting skills clearly connected with the World Cup's international focus. Born in Mogadishu, Somalia, he moved to Toronto when he was a teenager. Since then, his fusion of African music, reggae, folk and socially conscious hip-hop has brought a message of courage and positivism to the world.
“We took something like 50 drums and did this crazy remix” K’naan recently told Billboard.biz. “We all get together and the world forgets its conflict and we focus on this unity and celebration.”
K’naan recently rewrote his anthem again while in Vancouver during the 2010 Olympics. He went back into the studio, with a number of new friends who just happen to also be famous musicians and re-recorded “Wavin' Flag,” with proceeds going to Haiti relief.
Infectious rhythms…powerful lyrics, it’s easy to see why “Wavin’ Flag” represents the feelings of a world brought together not just to celebrate football but to celebrate courage, hope and peace.
