SOCAN once again showed its support for Western Canada's francophone pop music on June 13, 2008, when it presented its $1,000 Best Song Award as part of the 19th annual Chant'Ouest gala. The event was held in the Mae Wilson Theatre in Moose Jaw, Sask. Singer-songwriter Roméo Gasasira, an African native currently living in Alberta, received the award from SOCAN singer-songwriter François Tremblay for his song "Au cœur de ma cité."
SOCAN sponsored training workshops for the competition finalists, and provided its current and potential members with a SOCAN info session hosted by Montreal office Relationship Specialist Stéphanie Falco. Other top winners included Scott Richmond, from Gravelbourg, Sask., and Véronique Poulin, from Zenon Park, Sask.
Chant’Ouest is a celebration of emerging francophone singer-songwriters and performers from Western Canada. It is open to the finalists of annual competitions held in each of the country's four Western provinces.
