SOCAN is pleased to announce The Weakerthans – Stephen Carroll, John Samson, Greg Smith and Jason Tait – as the winners of its third annual ECHO Songwriting Prize, for the song “Night Windows.”
Over the summer, an independent panel of 10 music community tastemakers selected the five songs they felt best showed the variety and creativity of independent, up-and-coming Canadian songwriters. Thousands of music lovers voted between Sept. 1 - 29 and, in the face of some stiff competition, “Night Windows” emerged as the winning song.
The other nominated songs for the ECHO Songwriting Prize were:
- “Double Suicide” written and performed by Sandro Perri
- “Lucklucky” written and performed by Veda Hille
- “Weighty Ghost” written by Loel Campbell, Tim D’eon, Paul Murphy and Jud Haynes, performed by Wintersleep
- “You Are Never Alone” written by Josh Dolgin, Doris Glaspie, Katie Moore and Waleed Shabazz, performed by Socalled
The Francophone counterpart of the award, the Prix de la chanson ÉCHO, has been awarded to Louis Cormier and François Lafontaine of Karkwa for their song "Oublie pas."
