Quebec worldbeat pioneer Éval Manigat dies at 69
The bassist, vibraphonist, conductor, composer and arranger Éval Manigat, a SOCAN member whose Latin, jazz and rock-influenced rhythms helped introduce worldbeat music to Quebec audiences, died in his native Haiti on Aug. 12, 2008. A Juno Award winner in the Best Global Recording category for Africa+ in 1993, Manigat had settled in Quebec in the mid-1970s, and returned to Haiti two years ago to impart his knowledge and passion to a new generation of homegrown musicians.
