La Patère Rose won SOCAN's $1,000 Best Song Award May 6 in the finals of the 12th annual Francouvertes competition. The awards were presented in Montreal's Club Soda in front of a packed audience. Yann Perreau presented the prize to the electro-pop trio (Fanny Grosjean and ex- Misteur Valaire members Thomas Hébert and Julien Harbec) for the bilingual song "Backyard Souvenir." The group also received the evening's Grand Prize, which included a $10,000 cash award from SIRIUS satellite radio, as well as the Public Award, a $1,000 prize from Guilde des musiciens et musiciennes du Québec, and several other honours.
Other current and potential SOCAN members also were among the event's winners, including the groups Bonjour Brumaire and Le Citoyen, which placed second and third, respectively. The Francouvertes competition presents upcoming artists with opportunities to perform in professional surroundings, develop industry contacts and reach new audiences. SOCAN was represented by education and outreach specialist Stéphanie Falco. For complete details and a winners list, visit the Francouvertes website.
