Six SOCAN members have won Gemini Awards for best original music scores in five Canadian television productions. The composers were among those celebrated over the course of three evenings, Oct. 20-22, 2008, in awards presentations at the Liberty Grand Entertainment Complex in Toronto, with each evening devoted to a specific genre of TV programs or series.
The winners are:
- Mark Korven, best original music score for a documentary program or series, for A Promise to The Dead: The Exile Journey of Ariel Dorfman
- Tom Szczesniak, Carolyn Hay and Ray Parker, best original music score for an animated program or series, for Ruby Gloom (Hairless the Musical - Part 1)
- David Krain, best original music for a lifestyle/practical information or reality program or series, for Mantracker (Dustin and Ian)
- Robert Carli earned two Geminis: One for best original music score for a dramatic program, mini-series or TV movie, for Victor: The Victor Davis Story; and one for best original music score for a program or series, for Murdoch Mysteries (Bad Medicine)
Although they didn't win their award in a music composition category, Cowboy Junkies members Margo Timmins, Alan Anton, Michael Timmins, Peter Timmins, as well as their musical guests Jeff Bird, Ryan Adams (BMI), Vic Chesnutt (BMI) and Natalie Merchant (ASCAP), won the best performance in a performing arts program or series award for Cowboy Junkies: Trinity Revisited.
The main Gemini Awards Gala will be held on Friday, Nov. 28, 2008, at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, but there are no music awards included in that evening's presentations. SOCAN has been a supporter and corporate member of the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television, which presents the Geminis, since 1998.
