SOCAN members Bublé and Mitchell win Grammys

Crooner Michael Bublé was among the winners of 2008 Grammy Awards.

SOCAN members Michael Bublé and Joni Mitchell made the winners’ list at the 2008 Grammy Awards, held Feb. 10 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, although neither was able to attend the show.


Crooner Bublé took his star turn with Call Me Irresponsible, which won him a Grammy as Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album. Mitchell was fêted in the Best Pop Instrumental Performance category for her song “One Week Last Summer,” from the album Shine. As well, Album of the Year and Best Contemporary Jazz Album nods went to Herbie Hancock’s River: The Joni Letters, his tribute to Mitchell and featuring performances by the Canadian songwriting icon as well as her illustrious compatriot, Leonard Cohen.


In the classical field, the American ensemble Eighth Blackbird won the Grammy for Best Chamber Music Recording for its disc Strange Imaginary Animals, which features two compositions by University of Manitoba professor and SOCAN member Gordon Fitzell.


This year had been a major one for Canadian Grammy nominees, with nods for Feist (four), Nelly Furtado (three), Nickelback, Rush, Arcade Fire, Emerson Drive, Loreena McKennitt, Walter Ostanek and Marc-André Hamelin.
