SOCAN was a major sponsor of the 40th anniversary Festival international de la chanson de Granby, held in early September in Quebec’s Eastern Townships. SOCAN’s main contribution to the event was the annual Carrefour Chanson SOCAN, an intensive two-week training program on all aspects of the music profession, presented to the competition semi-finalists and extended by a third week for the benefit of the four finalists.
On Sept. 13 at the Granby Palace, SOCAN also presented its Best Song Award to singer-songwriter Pêro for "L'inévitable orage." The award, which comes with a $1,000 cash prize, was presented by SOCAN member Steve Veilleux, of the group Kain, who is this year’s festival’s spokesperson. In his presentation, Veilleux shared his appreciation of SOCAN by saying that it is an organization that "helps artists make music and make a living at the same time," and adding that "we owe a lot to SOCAN." The Grand Prize is be presented on Sept. 20. The four finalists are Chloé Lacasse, Violett Pi, Casabon and Guillaume Gagnon.
