SOCAN was pleased to honour singer-songwriter Kalan Porter and his co-writer Gregory Johnston with a No. 1 Award for their song “Hurray” which reached the top spot on the MuchMusic Countdown chart on May 29, 2008.
SOCAN’s Vicki Walters, Irene Zeltway and Jacklyn Stott were in attendance as SOCAN board member Jodie Ferneyhough presented the No. 1 Award to Johnston and Kalan – who recorded and performs the song – at Sassafraz restaurant, in Toronto’s fashionable Yorkville district, on the evening of July 9, 2008. (The third co-writer of the song, Stevie Sallis, who is unaffiliated with any performing rights organization, will receive his plaque at a later date.)
The song is published by the Southern Music Publishing Co. Canada, administered by peermusic Canada. Peermusic’s Cheryl Link and Maggie Hidderley also received award plaques at the celebration.
