Three SOCAN members made Knights of the Francophonie Order
Three SOCAN members were among the 17 Quebecers who were admitted into the Ordre de la Pléiade in 2008. The composer René Dupéré, of Cirque du Soleil fame, the opera singer Natalie Choquette, and the singer-songwriter Dan Bigras were all made Knights of the international Francophonie Order in a ceremony that took place July 5, 2008, at the Château Frontenac in Quebec City.
"This being the 400th anniversary of the founding of Quebec City and of French presence in North America, we are particularly proud to welcome these outstanding men and women to the Ordre de la Pléiade," said the Quebec National Assembly speaker Michel Bissonnet, who is also the first vice-chair of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Francophonie. "On behalf of all of my colleagues in the National Assembly, I salute their remarkable contributions to the influence of the French language here and around the world."
The order was created in 1976 to honour outstanding individual contributions to the ideals of the International Assembly of Francophone Parliamentarians. It includes, in order of importance, the five ranks of Grand Croix, Grand Officer, Commander, Officer and Knight. To date, more than 200 Quebecers have been decorated.
