SOCAN member and industry relations executive Tim Hardy was on hand to educate musicians on June 3, 2008, during the weekly Music Nova Scotia (Music NS) open mic night at the Seahorse Tavern in Halifax.

In a special “Industry Room” set up for the event, Hardy gave an info session about SOCAN, speaking with a number of young members and future members about SOCAN membership, registering songs with Broadcast Data Systems to get paid for radio airplay, as well as radio, TV & live performance royalties. Hardy also gave away a SOCAN sweatshirt during the event, to prizewinner (and SOCAN member) Dusty Keeler (a.k.a. Dusty Sorbet), who closed the night’s performances.

Before his finale, about a dozen energetic and talented performers played, showcasing their captivating original music, in a wide variety of styles. Ryan Cook, in particular, stole the show – and the host’s sunglasses – with his energetic, rocking country style.

The opportunity to discover new talent and gain industry insight continues at the Seahorse on Tuesday nights, courtesy of Music NS.
