SOCAN board member Jim Vallance was invested into the Order of Canada in a ceremony held on April 11, 2008. Vallance, who was invested as a Member of the Order, was cited as “one of Canada’s most prolific and successful songwriters…producing some of the most famous and iconic songs in Canada’s popular music profile” and “an active contributor to many charitable endeavours.”
At the same ceremony, Vallance’s fellow SOCAN members were also honoured: Douglas MacPhee and Chrystine Brouillet were invested as Members of the Order, while Donat Lacroix and Tom Cochrane were invested as Officers. MacPhee is a renowned Cape Breton pianist and musical archivist; Brouillet is one of Quebec’s most renowned novelists; Lacroix is a poet, singer and “ambassador for Acadia”; Cochrane is a Canadian rock icon and compassionate humanitarian.
The Order of Canada, created in 1967 and having celebrated its 40th anniversary last year, is Canada’s highest civilian honour recognizing lifetime achievement.
