Two Quebec-born music greats, SOCAN members Leonard Cohen and Robert Charlebois, are among the 49 people who were recently appointed to the National Order of Quebec. The poet and singer-songwriter Cohen was made a Grand Officer, while the iconic Francophone pop singer Robert Charlebois was made an Officer.

Other personalities on the 2008 honours list include the filmmaker Anne Claire Poirier, the newscaster Pierre Bruneau, the novelist Louis Caron, the painter Silvia Araya, the former hockey player Émile Bouchard, and the music lover extraordinaire Edgar Fruitier.

The Order's insignias will be presented to the new Grand Officers, Officers and Knights by Quebec Premier Jean Charest in a ceremony to be held June 18, 2008, in the Legislative Chamber of Parliament in Quebec City.

The National Order of Quebec awards are made by the Premier on recommendations from the Council of the National Order of Quebec, and are the highest honour bestowed by the Quebec government. For a complete list of appointees, please visit the Order’s website.
