Béatrice Martin, a.k.a. Cœur de pirate, won the prestigious Best Song of the Year award at France’s Victoires de la musique awards on March 6, 2010, for “Comme des enfants.” While thanking the public for voting for her song, the Quebec artist also thanked “my parents, for forcing me to learn the piano” and “all those boyfriends who dumped me and gave me so much to write songs about.”
The 20-year-old SOCAN member is represented in France by the powerful Barclay organization. After being in that country for just ten months, Cœur de pirate has already sold 200,000 copies of her debut album there. Her next album should be out by year’s end, and her current tour, which continues until July, will include an appearance at the Printemps de Bourges festival.
Another SOCAN member with a successful career in France, Ariane Moffatt, was one of the Victoires’ four finalists in the Revelation of the Year category. She performed her hit song “Je veux tout” before an audience of 6,000 at the awards ceremony, which was watched by an additional 5 million-strong television audience. The show was also broadcast in Canada on TV5.
