Leonard Cohen, Michael Bublé earn Grammy honours


SOCAN members Michael Bublé and Leonard Cohen were among the honourees at the 52nd annual Grammy Awards, presented January 31, 2010, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.


Bublé captured his second Grammy in the category of Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album for his release Michael Bublé Meets Madison Square Garden. The star crooner, who was also a winner in the same category in 2008, was not present at the pre-show event when his name was announced.


Cohen received the Grammys’ lifetime achievement award, presented at a special advance ceremony on Jan. 30.


Another great Canadian, Neil Young, was also feted at the Grammys: in the category of Best Boxed or Limited Edition Package for his Archive collection (his first Grammy) and as person of the year, for his charitable work as well as his decades-long music career. The Toronto-born singer-songwriter was the guest of honour at a Jan. 29 MusiCares fundraising dinner in L.A.


Finally, SOCAN publisher member ole earned its first Grammy for Taylor Swift’s “White Horse,” co-written with Liz Rose, which was named Best Country Song.


Toronto rapper Drake, who was a double nominee this year but was not among the winners, took the stage during the show to perform his hit “Forever” with Lil Wayne and Eminem. Fellow SOCAN member Céline Dion also performed as part of a special tribute to Michael Jackson.
