Canadian hip-hop artist K'naan's signature tune and inspirational anthem "Wavin' Flag" has been re-worked, re-recorded and released online as a benefit single for Haiti by a cross-section of more than 50 Canadian music stars (almost all of them SOCAN members).
Calling themselves Young Artists for Haiti, the group includes Justin Bieber, Jully Black, Tom Cochrane, Blue Rodeo's Jim Cuddy, Drake, Nelly Furtado, Metric’s Emily Haines, Hedley's Jacob Hoggard, Colin James, Kardinal Offishall, Avril Lavigne, Lights, Corb Lund, Matt Mays, Stephan Moccio, Sam Roberts, Serena Ryder, Hawksley Workman and Nikki Yanofsky, among others.
The multitude gathered on Feb. 18, 2010, in a Vancouver studio (while most of them were in that city to play at various Olympic-related cultural events) and recorded the song in an effort to help the victims of the Haiti earthquake. The brand-new version of "Wavin' Flag," which includes new lyrics specific to Haiti, and is produced by the legendary Bob Ezrin, was released wherever music is sold digitally on March 12, 2010. All proceeds from the sales of the song go to Free The Children, War Child Canada and World Vision.
