SOCAN members make big splash in 2010 International Songwriting Competition

Out of almost 15,000 entries, SOCAN members made a big splash in the International Songwriting Competition (ISC) in 2009, winning four first place awards, three second place, one third place, and many honourable mentions in various categories. This is a remarkable win for SOCAN songwriters and reflects the depth and diversity of talent coming out of the Canadian music scene. The ISC announced the 2009 competition results in late April 2010.
First place in the blues category was awarded to Suzie Vinnick and Dan Kershaw, for their song "Sometimes I Think I Can Fly." Winning first place in the instrumental category were Chris McKhool and Kevin Laliberté (of the group Sultans of String) for "Yalla Yalla!" First place in the teen category was awarded to Victoria Leone (Age 16) for "Pretend." First place in the music video category was awarded to Sam Roberts for the video to his song "Them Kids" (directed by Dave Pawsey).
Second place in the R&B/hip-hop category went to "In a Minute" by Tea Petrovic (Tea), Dane Deviller, and Krischan Grohne (not a SOCAN member). Winning second place in the rock category were Nate Cole, Gabe Combs, Liska Cole, Coury Combs, Joel Plotnik and Brandon Schwartzel (of the band Castledoor) for their song "Fifth Tambourine." Second place in the children's category went to Andrew Queen for "Big Troubles for Little Red." Third place in the gospel category was awarded to Dan Bremnes for "You Are."
More than $150,000 USD in cash and prizes was shared among the more than 60 winners, including an overall Grand Prize of $25,000 USD cash and more than $20,000 USD worth of musical equipment and services. For a complete list of 2009 winners and to hear the winning songs, visit the ISC website
