K'naan wins songwriting Juno; SOCAN's Juno song circle highlights writers

K'naan won the Juno Award for Songwriter of the Year at the 2010 Juno Awards, held April 18 at Mile One Centre in St. John's, Nfld. "It's a real honour, a real pleasure," he said as he received the award. "There is no greater dream than the one that comes true in the way of a song."


K'naan, who also won a Juno Award for Artist of the Year, performed the Haitian benefit version of his song “Wavin' Flag” as a finale to the awards ceremonies, accompanied by Nikki Yanofsky, Drake and Justin Bieber.


Marjan Mozetich won Classical Composition of the Year honours for Lament in the Trampled Garden, while Andrea Lindsay took home the Francophone Album of the Year award for Les Sentinelles dorment. Michael Bublé was the big winner of the night, garnering four awards: Single (for "Haven't Met You Yet"), Album, Pop Album (both for Crazy Love) and Fan Choice of the Year. On the afternoon of April 18, SOCAN co-sponsored (with the Canadian Music Publishers Association) the Songwriters’ Circle – an intimate afternoon concert featuring outstanding performances and enlightening stories (in two sets) from host Dallas Green (a.k.a. City and Colour, who took home Songwriter of the Year honours at the 2009 Juno Awards), and performers Bahamas, Alex Cuba, Amelia Curran, Ron Hynes, Michael Kaeshammer, Lights and Amy Millan. The ever-popular circle, which drew a capacity crowd, was presented from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. (NT) at the St. John's Arts & Culture Centre at Memorial University.
