Beau Dommage feted by Quebec National Assembly
The six members of the legendary, long-disbanded group Beau Dommage – SOCAN members Pierre Bertrand, Marie Michèle Desrosiers, Réal Desrosiers, Michel Hinton, Pierre Huet, Robert Léger and Michel Rivard – were awarded the Quebec National Assembly Medal of Honour from speaker Yvon Vallières in Quebec City on Apr. 28, 2009. The honour followed a unanimous motion calling for official recognition of the group’s "outstanding contributions to Quebec’s cultural and artistic heritage" on the occasion of its 35th anniversary.
The idea for this tribute was initially suggested by the Parti Québécois MP for Bourget, Maka Kotto, as a way of bringing the "assembly of the people" to recognize the imprint that Beau Dommage has left on current Quebec society. Referring to a well-loved character from the group’s 1974, era-defining, self-titled début album, Mr. Kotto suggested that "Ginette may no longer be dancing in that Sorel area motel but, for many generations of Quebec men and women, the songs of Beau Dommage will endure as everlasting reminders of those who have helped shape the Quebec identity by celebrating life events large and small." Quebec Culture Minister Christine St-Pierre followed suit by thanking the artists "for the tremendous breath of fresh air you brought into the lives of Quebecers of my generation."
