Bob Hunka, SOCAN’s representative in Los Angeles, was in Montreal on May 10 for an industry event titled “Marketing Me: In Conversation with Bob Hunka” that was sponsored jointly by the Screen Composers Guild of Canada, SPACQ (Société professionnelle des auteurs et des compositeurs du Québec) and SOCAN. The seminar provided composers from the Montreal area with an opportunity to meet Hunka and benefit from his vast experience in the music business.
The event, held at L’Ambroisie Restaurant and moderated by AV music composer Darren Fung, dealt with factors affecting potential success in the Los Angeles audiovisual industry, and touched on such topics as the need for networking, pitching flexibility (some older music supervisors still prefer CDs to computer files) and motivation. A generous speaker, Hunka went over the planned two-hour time limit as he answered questions from some 20 seasoned composers such as Michel Cusson (Aurore, Maurice Richard) and Michel Corriveau (Bon cop, Bad cop, French Kiss), as well as younger music creators and songwriters who wanted to learn how to go about placing a song in a film. SOCAN was represented at the event by Film & Television Account Representative Lyne Lanoue, who welcomed the participants.
