SOCAN board member Ed Glinert passes away suddenly at 63

Ed Glinert, an esteemed member of SOCAN’s board of directors, passed away on Saturday, May 21 in Toronto after suffering a stroke. His funeral was held on Monday, May 23. Ed had been in the music business since the mid-1960s. He was the president of Casablanca Media Publishing Inc., one of Canada’s most prestigious music publishers.

Prior to starting Casablanca Media Publishing, Ed practiced law for more than 25 years as one of Canada's foremost entertainment lawyers, providing advice in all aspects of the entertainment industry to such personalities as Ray Charles, David Letterman, Muddy Waters, James Cotton, Jim Carey and Howie Mandel, as well as record companies, music publishers, artists, writers, producers, film and television corporations and private investment groups. Ed also had extensive experience in the area of live performance both as an agent and promoter. A co-founder of two different children’s labels (Children’s Group and Casablanca Kids), Ed remained involved in the Canadian record business as a co-owner of Solid Gold Records and the internationally renowned house label Trax.

Ed is survived by his wife Ethel, his children Stephen and Alexis, his sister Ricki ,and many other family members. He will be missed dearly by his numerous colleagues in the music industry, including the SOCAN board of directors and staff. SOCAN will be making a donation in his memory to a charity of his family’s choice, either Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario.
