SOCAN was pleased to honour members Jordan Evans and Matthew Burnett with a No. 1 Song Award for co-writing Eminem's hit song "Not Afraid," which reached the top spot on the MuchMusic Countdown chart the
week of Sept. 2, 2010.
SOCAN's Jason Belo presented the No. 1 Award plaques to Evans and Burnett at the Sassafraz restaurant in Toronto's downtown Yorkville district on Dec.13, 2010. Their fellow SOCAN member and co-author of "Not Afraid," Matthew Samuels, was out of town and therefore unable to attend the event, but will receive his award plaque early in 2011. Other co-writers on the song are Luis Resto (ASCAP), and Eminem himself (BMI).
"Not Afraid" is published by Nueve Music LLC (ASCAP), Resto World Music (ASCAP), Shroom Shady Music (BMI), Songs of Universal Inc. (unaffiliated) and Sony/ ATV Tunes LLC (ASCAP). In October of 2010, an award plaque was also presented to Gary Furniss, representing the latter publisher.
The intimate celebration was attended by SOCAN's Ted Seto and Rodney Murphy, as well as the parents of Evans and Burnett, both of whom were extremely appreciative at being recognized by SOCAN in the first official acknowledgement of the song's success.
