Register now for Francophone film/TV music composition seminar
A seven-day composition seminar including 53 hours of training sessions and 16 hours of supervised laboratory work will be presented in the winter of 2010, on Feb. 27 and 28, and March 1, 2, 3, 5 and 12, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day at the University of Montreal under the direction of media composer and SOCAN outgoing president Pierre-Daniel Rheault, composers Louis Babin and Mathieu Lavoie, sound designer and mixer Roger Guérin and producer Michel Poulette.
The 12 composers selected to take part in this hands-on workshop will write and produce a demo recording for a short film soundtrack with the contribution of a live string quintet. Each participant will receive a one-hour coaching session on mixing following the recording session. Depending on their individual needs, seminar participants will be able to choose from 13 thematic workshops as the creative process moves forward. Participants will have access to the seminar’s four coaches and a to composition laboratory (until 9 p.m.) each day of the seminar, and their work will be assessed by an established film director.
Eligibility criteria:
- Being a professional composer with at least one concert, theatre, radio or AV performance to your credit.
- Not having scored more than five professional or semi-professional films.
- Being fully familiar with the Logic Pro 8, Finale or Sibelius software programs. Participants working with Digital Performer or any other sequencer may be admitted if they can demonstrate their ability to work without software or equipment supervision. Such participants will not qualify for technical support during the workshop.
- Applicants must complete the questionnaire included in the registration form to help coaches assess their skill level. An upgrading course for Logic Pro 8 (presented in Montreal June 11-13, 2009) will be required for designated applicants (a $45 additional fee will apply).
- Please complete and send an application form with your c.v. plus a CD of your (non improvised) music. Each piece should be in MIDI format and include its result in audio format (WAV, AIFF, MP3). As these files will be used to assess each applicant’s level of experience, a variety of styles would be an asset.
The application deadline is Oct. 29, 2009, and the registration fee is $175. To register for the seminar, please visit the Conseil québécois de la musique website, and click on “Formation.” For more information, please contact Danielle Beauchemin at (514) 524-1310, ext. 2, or write to diapason@cqm.qc.ca.
