Arcade Fire win 2011 Grammy for Album of the Year, two Brit Awards

Montreal’s Arcade Fire scored a major upset at the 53rd annual Grammy Awards, aired live on Feb. 13, 2011, from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, winning the Album of the Year award for their disc The Suburbs, beating out Eminem, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and the night's big winner, Lady Antebellum.

The band (all SOCAN members) had just finished a powerful performance of “Month of May” when they received the honour. Band members Win Butler and Régine Chassagne thanked their home city of Montreal in both official languages, then took up their instruments to close the show with a dynamite rendition of “Ready to Start.”

Two days later, the band also won two Brit awards, for best international group and best international album, edging out Black Eyed Peas, Vampire Weekend, The Script and Kings of Leon.

Other Canadians figured prominently in the Grammy awards and the ceremony. SOCAN member Michael Bublé won for Traditional Pop Vocal Album award for Crazy Love. His fellow member Drake and Justin Bieber (ASCAP), both of whom performed in different duets at the gala ceremony (Bieber with his mentor Usher, Drake with Rihanna), were each nominated in two categories but did not win. Other member nominees who didn't make the winners list were Alex Cuba, Rush, Melanie Fiona and Marc-André Hamelin. Neil Young (ASCAP) won the Rock Song award for “Angry World.”
