Out of more than 15,500 entries, SOCAN members made a huge splash in the International Songwriting Competition (ISC) in 2008, winning three first place awards, one second place, three third places, and many honourable mentions in various categories. This is a remarkable win for SOCAN songwriters and reflects the depth and diversity of talent coming out of the Canadian music scene. The ISC announced the 2008 competition results in early May 2009.

First place in the folk/singer-songwriter category was awarded to Gordie Sampson and his co-writer in this case, Michael Logen (of Nashville, not a SOCAN member), for their song "Davey Jones." Winning first place in the dance/electronica category were Bill Halliday and Gareth Jones (The Cansecos) for their song "Raised by Wolves.” First place in the R&B/hip-hop category was awarded to Tea Petrovic for her song "Fire & Flame."

Second place in the rock category went to "A Case of Mistaken Identity" by Remi Chasse (of the band Tailor Made Fable). Third place in the Americana category was awarded to Kim Beggs, for "Lips Stained Red with Wine." Winning third place in children's music were Christopher Pennington and Paul Johnston for "Banana Pie." And third place in the instrumental category went to Chris McKhool and Kevin Laliberté (of the Sultans of String) for "Luna (Whale Song)." No less than 27 Canadian songs were given an honourable mention.

More than $150,000 USD in cash and prizes was shared among the 62 winners, including an overall Grand Prize of $25,000 USD cash and more than $20,000 USD worth of musical equipment and services.
