SOCAN at MIDEM 2011
From Jan. 23-26, 2011, more than 8,000 delegates from more than 100 countries gathered at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes, France, to attend the 45th annual MIDEM, the world’s music market. SOCAN was among the official sponsors of the Canada Stand, and participated in the Quebec Stand, organized by ADISQ under the Musique du Québec banner. Some 43 companies did business at the Canada Stand, while 23 more met with visitors at the Quebec Stand, while still others had registered as independents. MidemNet, the affiliated conference for music business in the digital age, was held concurrently with MIDEM from Jan. 22-26. Representatives from many countries took advantage of a new addition to this year’s program, a speed networking session allowing three-minute pitches to all participants.
SOCAN members featured in Palais des Festivals showcases included Imaginary Cities, Maylee Todd, Jill Barber, Saidah Baba Talibah and Art of Fresh, as well as the Quebec member Ian Kelly.
The SOCAN member publishers (including some self-publishing songwriters) attending MIDEM 2011 as part of the Quebec Stand or as independents included Paolo Galati (Whammo), Daniel Lafrance (Editorial Avenue), Diane Pinet (Éditions Bloc-Notes), Gino Crescenza and Gino Olivieri (Finger Printz Music), Guillaume Lombard (Ad Litteram), Geneviève Côté (Frilance), Jim West (Justin Time), Franz Schuller (Indica Records), Sébastien Ouimet (Analekta), Pierre-Luc Durand (Tacca Musique), Alain Bédard (Effendi), Larry Mancini (Isba) and Raymond Duberger (Musique Variole), among others. Also highly visible at this year’s event were SOCAN songwriters Pierre Lapointe, Gourmet Délice and Jacinthe.
SOCAN was represented at MIDEM 2011 by president Earl Rosen, CEO Eric Baptiste, vice-president - Membership France Lafleur, and Quebec Division Membership manager Joanne Pouliot.
