Brian Dunn won the SOCAN-sponsored Best Songwriter Award for his song "Listening to Myself Die," at the 2011 Northern Ontario Music and Film Awards (NOMFAs), presented by Music and Film in Motion (MFM) April 30 in the Great Hall at Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ont.
Four other artists were also honoured in the musical award categories at the awards ceremony, which recognize the efforts and showcase the talent of the Northern Ontario’s music and film industries.
Patricia Cano won Best Album by a Solo Artist for This is the New World, while Best Album by a Duo or Group went to Broche à Foin for People we Have Known. Big Wheel and the Spokes were recognized for Best Vocal Performance on a Recording, for "Helpless," and Rob Nickerson won Best Recording Engineer for Playing in Traffic by Olivia Korkola,
As part of the conference weekend leading up to the awards ceremony, SOCAN presented a panel earlier that day, moderated by SOCAN education & outreach manager Rodney Murphy, entitled "Building Your Team." Panelists were Michael Gorman of Pandyamonium Artist Management, who's guided the careers of Juno Award winners Jully Black and Serena Ryder; Barb Sedun of EMI Music Publishing Canada; Stacey Mitsopulos of Taylor Miitsopulos Klein Obala Entertainment and Media Lawyers; and Tej Sandhu of Paquin Entertainment Group, an artist booking agency and management company.
