Songwriters, music publishers, key music industry players, top policy-makers, and other stakeholders in the creation, licensing, usage, and dissemination of intellectual property and creative content (like music) will gather together to exchange ideas and discuss their future in the ever-evolving digital environment at the third World Copyright Summit, to be held June 7-8, 2011, at the Square Brussels Meeting Centre in Brussels, Belgium.
Confirmed speakers at the Summit, presented by CISAC (International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers), include:
• Francis Gurry, Director General of WIPO (the World Intellectual Property Organization), who'll be interviewed by our own SOCAN CEO Eric Baptiste
• Roger Faxon, EMI Group CEO, who'll be interviewed by Paul Williams, songwriter and ASCAP President and Chairman of the Board
• Robin Gibb, legendary singer and songwriter of the Bee Gees and CISAC President
• Ivo Josipović, President of Croatia and music composer
A lineup of more than 100 speakers will engage in constructive dialogue on copyright protection and the distribution of creative works in the digital era. Where and how can value be extracted from the digital usage and dissemination of content (including music)? What models will deliver significant remuneration for rights owners, and ensure that they'll be properly compensated? Where do creators fit into this new environment? The Summit offers an ideal opportunity to discuss these issues with all stakeholders at the table.
The slogan for the Summit, “Creating value in the digital economy,” reflects the three main themes to be addressed:
• Create: The global eco-system for creators and creative industries
• Connect: The digital economy and new business models
• Respect: Authors’ rights and the legislative & social environment
“The voices of creators are seldom heard on copyright issues in the digital age, so their participation is what makes the World Copyright Summit a unique event,” says CISAC President Robin Gibb.
