“Come From Away” creators Hein, Sankoff to deliver keynote at free seminar

The couple who created the award-winning hit Broadway musical Come From Away will deliver the keynote address at a free, one-day musical theatre seminar, How to Succeed in Musical Theatre Business Without Really Trying. David Hein and Irene Sankoff will launch the event – presented by The SOCAN Foundation and co-produced by SOCAN – and scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 26, 2018, at The Al Green Theatre in downtown Toronto.

The event is designed to help musical theatre composers, lyricists, and book writers understand how to translate their creativity and hard work into earnings that pay the rent. In addition to the lessons of Hein and Sankoff, the seminar will address the value of musical copyrights, how best to exploit them, the way to write undeniable grant applications, what attracts music publishers, and how artistic directors and producers decide what to produce.

Among the panelists are:

  • Charlie Wall-Andrews, Executive Director of The SOCAN Foundation;
  • Andrea Kokonis, Associate General Counsel, SOCAN;
  • Sean Patrick Flahaven, CEO of The Musical Company, of New York;
  • Pat Bradley and Leah-Simone Bowen, Theatre Grant Officers at The Ontario Arts Council;
  • Natalie Bartello, Producer, Yonge Street Theatricals;
  • Mitchell Marcus, Artistic & Managing Director, The Musical Stage Company; and
  • Michael Rubinoff­, Producing Artistic Director, Canadian Music Theatre Project at Sheridan College.

The seminar is presented by The SOCAN Foundation, and co-produced by The Canadian Musical Theatre Writers Collective, The Musical Stage Company, Sheridan College, and SOCAN, in Partnership with the Al Green Theatre.
