SOCAN presented a No. 1 Song Award to SOCAN member and professional songwriter Jenson Vaughan, in recognition of him co-writing High Valley’s double-chart-topping song “I Be U Be” with band member Brad Rempel (who’ll receive his award at a later date).

The song – published by Ultra Music Publishing Canada and Sony/ATV Music Publishing Canada – scaled the peaks of both the Nielsen BDS Country Chart on May 15, 2017, and the CMT Canada Countdown on May 20, 2017. High Valley is the first Canadian group to reach the top of the Country Radio Charts in the Nielsen/BDS era.

SOCAN Manager, L.A. Division, Chad Richardson presented the award on June 1, 2017, during a celebratory dinner at Superpoint Pizza on Toronto’s fashionable Ossington Street strip.

“I humbly believe that music and hit songs are never about a format; they're  about the story,” said publisher Adrian Strong, President of Ultra Music Publishing Canada, at the presentation –  referring to the fact that Jenson, usually a pop songwriter, was receiving an award for a country song he co-wrote. “Prior to Jenson signing to Ultra, we spoke of not being stuck in a genre. We would watch old Sinatra performances on YouTube, and listen to classic R&B songs while overlooking what Drake calls “The Greatest City in The World” – Toronto. Jenson had an early passion for country music, and I was happy to introduce him to one of the top Canadian country groups, High Valley – and my friend, and main writer in the band, Brad Rempel. They both just clicked, because music is a language, not a format.”

The celebration was something of a SOCAN 2017 Kenekt Song Camp reunion (those participants are indicated with a “K”). The event provided the opportunity for a reunion of several participating songwriters and producers who worked together with Vaughan last month at the SOCAN 2017 Kenekt Song Camp in Nicaragua: Nicholas Henriques, Yash Gruzman, Tali Kouchnir, Rachael Kennedy and Michael Lantz. Also attending were SOCAN singer-songwriters Tim North and  JRDN..

Also attending from SOCAN were Chief Membership & Business Development Officer Michael McCarty; Director, A&R, Rodney Murphy; A&R Administrator Melissa Cameron; and A&R Co-Ordinator Andreas Rizek.

SOCAN congratulates both Jenson Vaughan and Adrian Strong on this great achievement!
