New tax changes for SOCAN licensees in B.C. and P.E.I.

March 19, 2013

Effective April 1, 2013, British Columbia and Prince Edward Island will be changing their taxes. British Columbia’s 12% HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) will be replaced with a 5% GST (Goods and Services Tax). PEI will replace its 5% GST with 14% HST.

The rules that determine the tax rate that will be applied to your SOCAN licence fee are based not only on the location (province/territory) of the music use, but also on the time frame in which the music is used and/or the date the invoice is generated.

The only exceptions are taxes applied to new annual (Jan.-Dec. 2013) and semi-annual (Jan.-June 2013) reports received by licensees, which will be calculated at the new rates, i.e., 5% GST for B.C. and 14% HST for P.E.I.

You can always contact SOCAN at 1-866-944-6223 should you have any questions.
