Alessia Cara leads SOCAN member 2018 Grammy Award nominations with four (updated)

Globally successful R&B/Pop singer-songwriter Alessia Cara has earned four nominations – the most among our members this year – for the 61st annual Grammy Awards, to be held Sunday, Jan. 28, 2018, broadcast live, worldwide, from Madison Square Gardens in New York City.

Cara herself is nominated for New Artist of the Year, while her collaborations with other artists have earned three more nods: “1-800-273-8255,” by Logic featuring Alessia Cara & Khalid, is tipped for both Song and Video of the Year, while “Stay,” by Zedd & Alessia Cara, is up for consideration in the Pop/Duo Group Performance category.

Fast-rising new R&B/soul singer-songwriter Daniel Caesar has earned two Grammy nominee honours, in the R&B Performance field for "Get You" (featuring Kali Uchis), and in the R&B Album grouping, for his debut full-length recording, Freudian. The late, legendary singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen has been posthumously recognized with two nominations as well, for Rock Performance (for “You Want It Darker”) and American Roots Performance (for “Steer Your Way”) of the Year.

Other SOCAN member nominees include:

  • Arcade Fire are nominated for Alternative Music Album of the Year, for Everything Now.
  • Both Michael Bublé and Sarah McLachlan, both nominated for Traditional Pop Vocal Album of the Year, he for Nobody but Me (Deluxe Version), she for the seasonal offering Wonderland
  • The Weeknd, whose Starboy LP is tipped for Urban Contemporary Album of the Year
  • Jane Bunnett & Maqueque, whose second recording together, Oddara, gets the nod for Latin Jazz Album of the Year
  • Alex Cuba, who receives the Latin Pop Album nomination for Lo Único Constante
  • David Hein, whose work with his wife Irene Sankoff, as both producers and composers/lyricists, bring a Musical Theater Album nomination for the soundtrack to their Tony-winning musical, Come from Away
  • Mastering Engineer Joao Carvalho, along with engineer Ryan Freeland, honoured in the Engineered Album, Non-Classical category for their work on fellow SOCAN member Rose Cousins’ Natural Conclusion
  • The Goldberg Variations - The Complete Unreleased Recording Sessions June 1955, played by Glenn Gould, has been nominated for Best Historical Album

Northern Cree are nominated for regional Roots Music Album of the Year, for Miyo Kekisepa, Make a Stand [Live], while Adventure Club (Leighton James and Christian Srigley) are nominated for Remixed Recording of the Year, for their verison of Kehlani's 'Undercover." And the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, its conductor Andrew Davis, chorus Master Noel Edison, and the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir are all nominated in the Choral Performance category, for their Handel: Messiah. Sound engineer Charles Moniz earned a nomination for his work on Bruno Mars' 24K Magic, in the category of Engineered Album, Non-Classical. Matt Maher's album Echoes (Deluxe Edition) was nominated for Contemporary Christian Music Album of the Year.

Although not directly nominated for a Grammy Award, the following SOCAN members contributed significantly to recordings that were nominated for one:

  • Frank Dukes contributed to the song "Supercut" on the Lorde album Melodrama, nominated for Album of the Year.
  • Dukes and DZL both contributed to the 6LACK album Free 6LACK, nominated for Urban Contemporary Album of the Year.
  • SOCAN Kenekt Song Camp alumnus Sevn Thomas contributed to the Khalid album American Teen, also nominated in the same category.
  • Pierre Marchand produced Sarah McLachlan's album Wonderland, nominated for Traditional Pop Vocal Album of the Year.
  • Both Michael Buble and kd lang perform on ther compilation album Tony Bennett Celebrates 90, also nominated in the same category.
  • The Weeknd was one of the co-writers of the song "Lust for Life," while Boi-1da and T-Minus were two of the co-writers of the song "Summer Bummer," both included on the Lana Del Rey album Lust for Life, nominated for Pop Vocal Album of the year.
  • Milosh contributed to the song "Break Apart" on Bonobo's album Migration, nominated for Dance/Electronic Album of the Year.
  • Joni Mitchell and Loverboy both have songs included in the Music Film of the Year nominee Soundbreaking (Various Artists),
  • as does fellow Canadian Justin Bieber. Bieber also contributed significantly to the huge worldwide hit “Despacito,” nominated for Record, Song, and Pop Duo/Group performance of the Year.
