Apply now for 2014 edition of CBC Searchlight contest

March 14, 2014

SOCAN members and other Canadian musicians have until Mar. 23, 2014, to enter CBC Music's annual Searchlight contest, which offers artists local and national exposure through a Canada-wide contest.

The grand prize includes $20,000 worth of music equipment from Yamaha Canada Music, a professional recording from CBC Music and an opening spot on a high-profile music showcase. The winner will also receive potential airplay on CBC Radio One, Radio 2 and/or Radio 3. The winner will be announced on CBC's Q with Jian Ghomeshi.

Last year winner, SOCAN member Sherman Downey (and his band, The Ambiguous Case) won the contest, and consequently found their music heard and embraced by thousands of new fans who otherwise might not have been exposed to it. “It’s so amazing to have entered the Searchlight contest with only the hope of finding a new audience,” said Downey after winning, “only to discover that suddenly a lot of people are listening. We are blown away by the attention that the CBC Searchlight Contest has brought to the band.”

To sign up, artists must create a profile at CBC Music, then upload an original song written and/or recorded by them and/or their band. Potential applicants can check full contest details here, and complete the entry form here.
