Apply now for 2018 Soundstreams Emerging Composer Workshop

November 29, 2017

SOCAN composers of all kinds are invited to apply now for Soundstreams’ 2018 Emerging Composer Workshop (ECW). The Workshop is a 10-day intensive mentorship program that supports talented young composers and helps them to launch their careers. The sixth edition of the ECW will take place May 30 through June 8, 2018, in Toronto.

This year especially, Soundstreams – one of the foremost global presenters of new Canadian music –  is opening the door to composers outside of the usual field of traditional “classical” or “concert music.”

“We encourage composers from all genres to apply,” says Emma Fowler, Soundstreams Director of Artistic Planning and Outreach. “While the ECW is often perceived as ‘classically oriented,’ in fact, one of the core values of the program is the vibrant peer-to-peer learning that stems from a diverse group of participants, who each bring a unique approach to their music.”

This year, the ECW international and domestic mentors will be Pulitzer Prize winner David Lang (U.S.) and multiple award winner James Rolfe (Toronto). There will also be a professional resident ensemble consisting of a soprano, baritone, piano, violin and cello. The Workshop features an array of rehearsals, seminars, networking, professional development activities, and a public showcase of new works created there.

This season’s Workshop focus will be music with text: either sung, spoken or implied. Participants will be tasked with writing a piece of music for one singer (either soprano or baritone), with the other singer playing simple percussion only, and ensemble.

ECW welcomes both domestic and international submissions; six composers will be chosen to participate. Thanks to Soundstreams’ generous sponsors and donors, there are no tuition fees to attend the workshop, and participant accommodations are provided free of charge.
The submission deadline for applications is January 8, 2018 (at 11:59 pm ET). For more details, or to apply, click here.
