Composer André Hamel wins 2012 Serge Garant Prize
Quebec contemporary music composer André Hamel, a SOCAN member, received the 2012 Serge Garant Prize of the Fondation Émile Nelligan on Nov. 19, 2012, along with a $25,000 cash award.
The Serge Garant Prize is a lifetime achievement award presented every third year to an artist regardless of the length or his/her career. The well-known composer Yves Daoust, who received the 2009 prize, was a member of this year’s jury. The jury was chaired by the musicologist Jean Boivin, who commented in his presentation that Hamel was “headed in the right direction. The quality of your existing work is indicative of the depth of your approach. Keep it up, and may the greater independence this official recognition is bound to provide you with be a guarantee (no pun intended) of yet more artistic contributions of this magnitude in the coming years.”
The Fondation Émile-Nelligan has distributed more than $1,300,000 in awards to 60 Quebec winners since 1979 in the fields of contemporary music, visual arts and creative writing.
