Double-winner Classified earns Song of the Year honour at 2017 East Coast Music Awards

Classified won the honours for both Song (“No Pressure") and Rap/Hip Hop Recording of the Year (Greatful) at the 2017 East Coast Music Awards (ECMAs), the gala ceremonies of which were held on April 30, during the Music Industry Awards reception at Delta Hotels by Marriott Saint John, in Saint John, New Brunswick. Ben Caplan earned the award for Songwriter of the Year, Scott Macmillan won Classical Composition of the Year for Currents of Sable Island, and the Venue of the Year was Plan b Lounge in Moncton.

Besides Classified, other double-winners were Ria Mae, who garnered both for Pop Recording and Solo Recording of the Year (for Ria Mae), and Lennie Gallant, who won the Fans Choice Entertainer of the Year and Folk Recording of the Year (for Searching for Abegweit). As part of the week leading up to the awards ceremony, renowned songwriter and multiple SOCAN Award winner Brad Roberts led the SOCAN Song House at East Coast Music Week 2017, April 26-27. Ten songwriter participants from Atlantic Canada were selected to participate, gaining valuable insight into the craft of writing a hit song. They were Elise Besler, Emily Stuart, Jaclyn Reinhart, Jason Price, Leanne Hoffman, Maje, Peter Willie Youngtree, Rachel Beck, T. Thomason, and Tyler Hache. Three students from a local music school, The InterAction School of Performing Arts, also attended the camp:  Brandon Murdoch, Luc Poirier, and Sydney Irvin.

In addition to the workshop, the East Coast Music Awards, in partnership with the Atlantic Presenters Association, will present the second annual SOCAN Song House Tour –a “block booked” tour that features five of the SOCAN Song House workshop’s participants (one from each Atlantic region), and also features the new work developed during the Song House.
