Drake, The Weeknd, Shawn Mendes lead 2017 JUNO Award nominations with five each

Drake, The Weeknd and Shawn Mendes are each nominated for a leading five JUNO Awards in 2017, with all of them in the running for Single, Album and Artist of the Year, as well as the JUNO Fan Choice honour. For their fifth nominations, Drake is tipped for Rap Recording, The Weeknd for Pop Album, and Mendes for R&B/Soul Recording of the Year. Close behind with four nominations apiece are Alessia Cara and the late Leonard Cohen.

The nominees for the SOCAN Songwriter of the Year Award are:

  • Donovan Woods
  • Gord Downie
  • Leonard Cohen
  • Ruth B
  • Tegan and Sara

Alessia Cara, A Tribe Called Red, The Strumbellas and Ruth B are all  scheduled to perform at the 2017 gala JUNO Awards ceremony on Sunday, April 2, broadcast live on CTV and CTV GO from The Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa.

The nominations for Classical Composition of the Year are:

  • Ana Sokolovic for And I need a room to receive five thousand people with raised glasses… or…what a glorious day, the birds are singing “halleluiah”
  • Andrew Staniland for Dark Star Requiem
  • Christos Hatzis for Going Home Star – Truth and Reconciliation
  • Jordan Noble for Immersion
  • Kati Agocs for The Debrecen Passion

Francophone Album of the Year nominees are:

  • Fred Fortin for Ultramarr
  • Karim Ouellet for Trente
  • Koriass for Love Suprême
  • Laurence Nerbonne for XO|
  • Yann Perreau for La fantastique des astres

In addition to presenting the Songwriter of the Year Award, and for the second year in a row, SOCAN is the presenting sponsor of the JUNO Gala Dinner & Awards, at which most of the awards are handed out. As well, during the week of events leading up to the awards, SOCAN will once again serve as a co-presenting sponsor of the JUNO Songwriters’ Circle – widely known as “The Jewel of the JUNO Week” – with performers TBD.
