The 21 contestants in the 2017 edition of the Francouvertes have been announced, and SOCAN has renewed its partnership with this major music contest dedicated to emerging Francophone musical talent. In all, 21 artists and bands from Québec, Saskatchewan and New Brunswick will participate throughout the event’s 11 evenings, that will take place at Montréal’s Lion d’Or venue from Feb. 20 to April 19, 2017: Mélanie Venditti, Shawn Jobin, Antoine Lachance (Feb. 20), Maxime Auguste, Projet Coyote, Juste Robert (Feb. 27), Bermudes, Vulvets, Valery Vaughn (March 6), Kyra Shaughnessy, Les Louanges, Van Carton (March 13), MCC, Lydia Képinski, Étienne Fletcher (March 20), Laurence-Anne, Ariane Vaillancourt, Joey Robin Haché (March 27), Dave Chose, Fred Labrie, Renard Blanc (April 3).

A total of $150,000 in prizes are up for grabs, including $1,000 for the Chanson coup de coeur SOCAN prize – which will be awarded, as usual, to the best song presented during the semi-finals. For a second consecutive year, SOCAN will also present the “J’aime mes ex” series of concerts, during which ten Francouvertes alumni – solo artists or bands – will perform as opening acts of the first round and semi-finals round of the contest. The 10 Francouvertes “exes” are:

  • Miss Sassoeur & Les Sassys (Feb. 20)
  • Tire le coyote (Feb. 27)
  • VioleTT Pi (March 6)
  • Joëlle Saint-Pierre (March 13)
  • Maritza (March 20)
  • Samuele (March 27)
  • Mehdi Cayenne (April 3)
  • Benoit Paradis Trio (April 17)
  • Simon Kingsbury (April 18)
  • Deux Pouilles en Cavale (April 19)

This year’s spokespersons for the Francouvertes are Rosie Valland and Philippe Brach, and this 21st edition has been dedicated to Andréanne Sasseville, who was the Francouvertes’ ambassador on SiriusXM, and who passed away in January. The host of the event for the past 15 years, Claude Grégoire, has announced his retirement from the Francouvertes and will be replaced by a new hostess, Mellissa Larivière. Stemming from a theatre background, this young creator and actress is also the founder and director of Zone Homa, a yearly summer event held in Montréal’s Hochelaga-Maisonneuve neighbourhood.

The three semi-finals will be held at Lion d’Or on April 17, 18, and 19, 2017, while the finals will be held at Club Soda on May 8, 2017. The online vote for the People’s Choice Award will be open from April 16 to May 6, 2017, at francouvertes.com.
