Singer-songwriter Klô Pelgag was awarded the 2017 Prix Rapsat-Lelièvre for the richness and artistic quality of her critically acclaimed 2016 album, L’étoile thoracique. Luc Fortin, Québec Minister of Culture and Communications and Minister responsible for the Protection and Promotion of the French Language, and Christine St-Pierre, Québec Minister of International Relations and La Francophonie, made the announcement on April 24, 2017.

The international jury selected Pelgag for the award because of her poetic use of the French language, the beauty of her orchestral compositions, and her highly theatrical stage presence. The young artist seems perfectly at ease onstage, as if it’s her playground. Experts always remark on her original and fresh live performances. Wide-ranging audiences are touched by her music and her eclectic, deep, sometimes funny lyrics, full of freedom and joie de vivre. Pelgag is also earned the 2014 Breakout Award at the Montréal Gala de la SOCAN, and she’ll tour in Japan for the very first time in the summer of 2017.

“This young artist is like a breath of fresh air on Québec’s music scene,” said Luc Fortin, Québec Minister of Culture and Communications, and Minister responsible for the Protection and Promotion of the French Language. “I’m really happy that she won the 2017 Prix Rapsat-Lelièvre. This way, the beauty and originality of her musical creations will be able to travel to Wallonie-Bruxelles. I’m convinced she will captivate people everywhere she goes. Congratulations, Klô Pelgag!”

Pelgag will receive a $5,000 cash prize from Wallonie-Bruxelles International. Her record label, Coyote Records, could receive up to $10,000 from the ministry of Culture and Communications in support to the promotion and marketing of her album in Wallonie-Bruxelles. The ministry of International Relations and La Francophonie also offers financial support to the artist up to $8,000 for promotional missions in Wallonie-Bruxelles. Pelgag will officially receive her award during the Francofolies de Spa, in Belgium, where she performs on July 20, 2017.

The Rapsat-Lelièvre Award is presented annually, alternating between an artist from Québec and one from the Wallonie-Bruxelles region of Belgium, to honour the excellence of an album of Francophone songs. For further information, visit the Rapsat-Lelièvre Award website.
