SOCAN #19 with a Bullet on Toronto Best Employers Chart

November 29, 2012

SOCAN has been named one of the Best Employers in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), following a national study measuring employee engagement. SOCAN ranks 19th among the small- and medium-sized organizations recognized by employees as being “a great place to work."

SOCAN boasts a team of nearly 316 full-time music industry professionals, with its head office in Toronto and additional offices in Montreal, Dartmouth and Vancouver. Collectively, these employees demonstrate high employee engagement – they say positive things about and want to stay with SOCAN, and they strive to contribute to SOCAN’s success – as evidenced by feedback directly from employees about their workplace and work experience collected for this year’s Best Employers research study.

"SOCAN serves the music industry so well, mainly due to our engaged and committed employees," said Randy Wark, Vice President of Human Resources at SOCAN. "All of us work in a rapidly changing and dynamic industry and we strive to answer those pressures by fostering a culture of camaraderie, commitment and balance."

Through various programs, many of which are initiated by employee-based committees, SOCAN is consistently able to promote a positive, productive, and dynamic workplace. A culture that supports engagement, work-life balance, and professional development is valuable to all employees and is a crucial aspect of SOCAN’s success.

Examples of SOCAN's winning organizational culture include a four-day work-week offering; an annual fun summer event; telework options; individual and group recognition programs; a compressed summer work-week for all employees; a focus on employee health and well-being that includes a variety of tools, resources and an annual Health and Wellness Fair; and much more.

Organizations eligible for a spot on the Best Employers in the GTA list are drawn from participants in the 2012 Best Employers studies, conducted annually by Queen’s University School of Business in conjunction with Aon Hewitt, a global human resources consulting firm. Those on the GTA small- and medium-sized list have between 50 and 399 employees, and are either headquartered or have a significant employee population in the GTA. The rankings were published in the Toronto Star on November 29, 2012.

Last year SOCAN ranked 24th in the list of 35 businesses recognized as Best Employers in the GTA.
