SOCAN welcomes many elements of the Creative Canada launch on Sept. 28, 2017, where Minister of Canadian Heritage Mélanie Joly outlined the Government of Canada’s vision for Canada’s cultural and creative industries in a digital world.

Despite a certain lack of details in most announcements, SOCAN is pleased to see that the new Creative Canada policy framework seeks to help creators and cultural entrepreneurs to develop the skills that they need to promote their music at home, and includes new funding for a Creative Export Strategy that will help Canadian creators access the global market. SOCAN also looks forward to the federal government’s proposed modernization of the Canada Music Fund, which will help Canadian music stand out even more among global competition.

"Admittedly, we were expecting somewhat more depth and details after such a long wait for this announcement, particularly in regard to music-related issues, but we’re pleased to see that the federal government is investing in Canadian content, at home and abroad," said SOCAN CEO Eric Baptiste. "SOCAN is also pleased that Minister Joly recognizes that investing in Canadian creators means ensuring that they're fairly compensated and their intellectual property is protected. Given the broad nature of the announcements, SOCAN is looking forward to discussing with Minister Joly and her team the specific measures and policy decisions that will result from Creative Canada, as well as within the upcoming review of the Copyright Act that we hope will be robust, and focused on creators.”

SOCAN continues to work with the Government of Canada on proposed reforms to the Copyright Board for 2018 and looks forward to participating in the parliamentary review of the Copyright Act, as well as in consultations for the upcoming review of the Broadcasting Act and the Telecommunications Act.

The Minister noted the importance of a strong local cultural scene to successful promotion internationally, which is a point SOCAN will continue to stress as these reviews are launched in the near future.
