SOCAN Comments on Copyright Board of Canada’s Decisions

August 28, 2017

Late on Friday, August 25th, after three years of deliberations the Copyright Board of Canada released its decisions concerning the interpretation of the Copyright Act’s new “making available right” and the most recent royalty rates approved by the Board for music streaming services such as Spotify, Google Play and Apple.

While SOCAN is pleased with some of the Board’s legal conclusions, we are concerned by a number of issues relating to the certification of the royalty rates.

SOCAN will continue our study of the decisions.

Please stay tuned for further information following our careful analysis of these lengthy decisions.
