SOCAN is very pleased by reports that the U.S. Copyright Royalty Board has significantly increased the combined rates to be paid by on-demand streaming services for mechanical and performing rights over the period 2018-2022.

SOCAN congratulates the National Music Publishers Association and all of the other participants in the proceedings who worked hard to make these increases happen.

The Copyright Royalty Board decision is in sharp contrast to a recent decision of the Canadian Copyright Board that significantly reduced the rates applicable to streaming services for the period 2011-2013. Rates for the current period are yet to be determined.
