SOCAN honours Shawn Mendes with SOCAN 2017 Pop Music Award, six SOCAN No. 1 Song Awards

SOCAN was pleased to honour Shawn Mendes with a 2017 SOCAN Pop Music Award for “Treat You Better,” honouring the greatest number of performances in its respective category in 2016, and six SOCAN No. 1 Song Awards for his many chart-topping hits of the past few years.

SOCAN CEO Eric Baptiste and Director, A&R, Rodney Murphy, presented the awards to Mendes after his performance at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto on Aug. 12, 2017.

Following is a list of the winning songs. Unless otherwise noted, all of the songs are co-written by Mendes, performed by him, co-published by Mendes Music and Universal Music Publishing Canada, and topped the MuchMusic Countdown chart:

  • "Something Big," co-written with Scott Friedman and Ido Zmishlany (both BMI), which topped the chart on March 20, 2015.
  • "A Little Too Much," written by Mendes alone, which scaled the peak of the chart on June 12, 2015.
  • "I Know What You Did Last Summer," performed by Mendes & Camila Cabello, co-written with William Withers, Noel Zanchella, and Karla Cabello (all BMI), which reached the summit of the chart on March 18, 2016
  • "Mercy," co-written with John Geiger, Ilsey Juber, and Daniel Parker (all BMI), which arrived at the pinnacle of the chart on Nov. 28, 2016
  • "Treat You Better," co-written with Scott Friedman and John Geiger (both BMI), which reached the top position on multiple charts, including:
    • The MuchMusic Countdown Chart on Sept. 16, 2016
    • The Nielsen BDS Hot AC Chart on Oct. 17, 2016
    • The Billboard Adult Top 40 Chart on Oct. 22, 2016
    • The Billboard Adult Contemporary Chart on Feb. 11, 2017
  • "There's Nothing Holding Me Back," co-written with Geoffrey Warburton, Scott Friedman,  and John Geiger, and co-published by Universal Music Publishing Canada and Sony / ATV Music Publishing Canada, which reached No. 1 on the Nielsen BDS Hot AC Chart on July 31, 2017, and on the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 on Aug. 26, 2017.
