SOCAN was happy to honour The Weeknd with a No. 1 Song Award for his global hit song “Starboy,” which reached the top of both the MuchMusic Countdown and the Nielsen BDS Top 100 All-Format Chart.

The Weeknd's speedy rise to world pop domination has been extraordinary, and SOCAN is pleased and proud to be a part of his team. One of our most celebrated members, he’s been nominated for an Academy Award, and won two Grammys and no less than nine(!) JUNOs. His Beauty Behind the Madness album has sold more than 3 million units in America alone, where three of its singles have each sold multi-platinum. “Starboy” was streamed more than 17 million times globally in its opening weekend. The Weeknd is arguably the biggest pop music artist in the world right now, with his biggest album, Starboy, just released.

SOCAN’s Michael McCarty and Rodney Murphy presented the award to The Weeknd after his live performance at the iHeart Radio Jingle Ball at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto on Nov. 25, 2016.

“Starboy,” performed by The Weeknd feat. Daft Punk, was written by The Weeknd, Henry “Cirkut” Walter, Martin “Doc” McKinney and Jason “Daheala” Quenneville (all SOCAN), as well as Daft Punk’s Guy-Manuel de Homem and Thomas Bangalter (both BMI). The song is published by KOBALT Music Publishing, SONGS Music Publishing, Universal Music Publishing Canada, and SAL&CO LP. “Starboy” reached the top of the MuchMusic Countdown on Oct. 28, 2016, and the Nielsen BDS Top 100 All-Format Chart on Nov. 14, 2016.

SOCAN congratulates The Weeknd on another great achievement!
